Satu Kalliokuusi
Ecological Visual Artist
Satu Kalliokuusi (Born 1965 at Kouvola, Finland) is a prominent Finnish ecological visual artist who works actively in different parts of Finland, Finnish Lapland and Baltic area as also in the international art world. Her art adheres to the critical cutting edge of contemporary art.
Her narrative is based on the Finno-Ugric mental landscape and its heritage.
Folklore topics about the connection between human and nature have emerged as a recent theme in Kalliokuusi's visual art, where the difference between human, the rest of nature and nature's spirits has dissolved.
Kalliokuusi examines glocal and global themes, such as mining disputes and forest policy. Kalliokuusi has dealt with these topics, for example, in the peripheral areas of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park in Finnish Lapland, in such a way that art has a national significance. At the same time, the works are current in the field of international environmental political contemporary art.
Kalliokuusi has been developing her own way of working in ecological fine art for decades, researching natural pigments, among other ecologically sustainable technics. This approach has become current both with the turn of neomaterialist philosophy and in the context of the art world.
